A weekend Poem

Why don’t I see what I used to see?
Why don’t I smell what I used to smell?
Why don’t I feel what I used to feel?
Why does nothing feel how it used to feel?

I used to…….
See the ray of sun when I wake up in the morning
Smell the grass in the fresh air
Feel the ray of sunlight that shine through my window
Find comfort hearing the sound of water dripping during my morning shower

Where are they? Where did you go?

Take a deep breath
Relax, smile and think positive
They are always here
When you felt happy, they became nearer
When you felt upset, they became further

So start cheering up
Get the rest you need
Enjoy a great weekend
And start seeing the things you used to see!

Have a great weekend and stay positive!

Congratulations and best luck to Kellsey Morley, per diem cook at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center

Kellsey Morley started at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center in 2011. She was completing her co-operative education program at Shawsheen Valley Technical High School at that time. Kellsey was a culinary major. Kellsey worked in the different areas of production during that time and ended up working part time as a cook.

Kellsey always has a smile on her face and makes everyone around her happy.  If you are lucky, you might catch a glimpse of  Kellsey singing or dancing to a song from the radio at her work station.

While working at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center,  Kellsey realized she was interested in a career in radiology just like her mom.

This past April,  Kellsey was accepted into the Radiology program at the Middlesex Community College and unfortunately today is her last day working at the hospital.

On behalf of the department, we wish Kellsey all the best! You will truly be missed! We know you will do well and be one of the best Radiology Technicians ever. Go Kellsey!

The answer to great customer service . It starts with YOU!

If you have been reading my blog post, I am sure you know how fortunate I feel to be able to work with a great group of talented and kind colleagues.

I have been conducting Sodexo Customer Service training classes for Food and Nutrition and Environmental Services department colleagues.  We learned who is our customer? Why it is important to treat everyone (colleagues, visitors, patients, residents) with CARES (Compassion, Accountability, Respect, Enthusiasm and Service) and why poor service is NOT acceptable(but most powerful) , good is NOT good enough as it is NOT memorable and why great service is what we should always strive for.  We need to work together as a team to achieve a memorable experience for all those we served. At Sodexo at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center, we believe Patients are the heart of everything we do.

We have groups discussions, lots of laughter and some honest feedback on how certain behavior could trigger an unhappy working environment and how we could prevent this from happening.

There are no clear path to great customer service.  Every moment, every interaction matters.  We all agreed it all starts from within.  I reminded everyone in the class to remember the joy that we all had when we received the phone call from the Human Resources department offering us our job.  The joy and happiness. The will to want to do a good job; the willingness to do what it takes to take care of the patients; the drive to learn and to excel.  How enthusiastic we were then! I reminded everyone that we should always remember this great feeling each day when we come to work.  It helps to make our day better, our job more rewarding, we become happier and that is when we can truly provide great customer service! It all starts from within and it all starts from YOU!

I saw smiles coming from everyone's face after I said these. Hoping to share this powerful message in this blog.

Hope it helps all readers to stay positive and be the best that you could be each and every day!

Have a great and wonderful day!

Here are pictures and video from my colleagues showing the power of positive attitude and the difference between good and great customer service.

Favorite Summer Activities- Featuring Darrin Cassidy, Patient Services Supervisor

Darrin has worked at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center for 8 years. He started as a per diem Nutrition Care Representatives while he was in high school and decided to join the department full time during college.

This week, I am very pleased to have Darrin tell us about his favorite summer activities- mountain climbing in New Hampshire.

"Summer is a great time to finally do those activities you think about all year long. During this past winter, I spent many of those dreadfully cold days thinking about climbing mountains once the weather finally turned nice. Recently, I finally got to climb the mountain I’ve been thinking about all year. Mount Washington, the biggest around. It’s the pinnacle peak of the White Mountains in New Hampshire, and to find a taller mountain one must travel into Canada or leave the Northeastern region of the United States altogether.

There is something incredibly freeing about being up in the clouds. Reality is different, physically and spiritually. As you travel up and down the slopes, you also travel through a wide range of emotions. There are times of intense stress and danger, as well as times of peace of calm.

One memorable moment on the mountainside was at a landmark called the Lion’s Head, which is basically the first mass of bedrock you come across after exiting the tree-line. After popping out of the woods and hurrying over to this landmark, it would be easy to wander into blinding fog or slip on some ice and fall 3,000 feet to your end. This ever-present element of mindfulness forces you to take in your surroundings and understand it all.

During my recent trip to the summit, I brought along a friend who had never climbed such a big mountain. We were going way too slow and I was afraid we weren’t going to make it back down before sunset. We made it back to the car just before it got dark and we avoided being stranded on the mountain all night. It’s amazing what a person can do with proper motivation and drive. My friend had never so much as glimpsed the mountain, yet he made it to the top and back down with speed. It doesn’t matter who you are. You can enjoy the beauty this land we live near has to offer.

Hiking through the wilderness is just one of the ways to enjoy this gorgeous weather. Kayaking, baseball, volleyball, the beach, running, taking a stroll around the block after dinner, or simply sitting in the sunshine outside your home are ways to take advantage of living  in a deciduous forest during the summer time.

Most New Englanders plan 100 intricate summer activities as winter wreaks havoc on their lives, but follows through on perhaps ten percent, taking these precious rays of summer sun for granted. Soon, the snows will come, and we will once more vow to do the things we could be doing right now."

Thank you Darrin for sharing your favorite summer activity with us!

Favorite Summer activities featuring Marianthi Mitro, Nutrition Care Rep

Marianthi Mitro has worked as a Nutrition Care Representative in the Food and Nutrition department since 2007. She takes great pride in preparing cold dishes for the patients.

Marianthi hometown is Athens, Greece. She goes to Greece frequently to visit her family. From her apartment in Athens, she can see the Parthenon, http://ancient-greece.org/architecture/parthenon.html , a temple of the greek goddess Athena. Marianthi speaks English, Greek and Albanian.

She currently lives in Burlington, Massachusetts with her daughter and her family. During the summer, she enjoys spending time with her daughter and grandchildren at the pool or enjoying a barbecue on the deck.

This summer Marianthi and her daughter have taken on a huge project at home. They are replacing their pool!

The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of August. Marianthi told us that she can't wait to enjoy the new pool and have a barbecue on the deck.

Thank you Marianthi for sharing your favorite summer activities with us!

"Kit Kat" moments in the Food and Nutrition department at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center- It's the little things that matter

In the Food and Nutrition department at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center, we run a busy operation with an average patient count of 310. Teamwork is very important and the management team always reminds themselves to take a moment to stop and thank our most important assets - our people. When we are immersed in our heavy workload, often times we forget to stop and show our appreciation.

Today during lunch time, Linda Clay, Director of Food and Nutrition walked around the department and cafeteria to thank all colleagues for their hard work and dedication to putting Patients at the heart of everything we do . She distributed Kit Kats and thanked all colleagues.

We called it our "Kit Kat" moment just like their slogan- Have a break, take a Kit Kat ®. It brought a smile to everyone's face. It's the little things that matter.
