The Human Connection....What is it?

I have heard about the phrase ‘human connection’ described in many ways. Some says that we are all bound by the same atom; some says it is one of the ways humans react to the different elements; some says it's being empathetic. For me, human connection happens when you and another person begin to form a bond, it happens when you and one other person started to express interest in the same topic. Human connection doesn't mean you have to agree with the other person. As one of my mentors Tim Sheehan always says “Different doesn't equal wrong”. I can't agree more with him. Human connection is about expressing your point of view on a topic of interest to you. It could happen anywhere, at anytime. It could be a simple smile. You could have a connection with someone anywhere anytime.

Recently, a few colleagues in the Food and Nutrition department at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center shared three amazing human connection stories with me, both of which reflect Lahey Hospital and Medical Center’s mission to "Exceed each day our patients’ high expectations for service”, and also Sodexo’s belief in "Making everyday a better day for all those we serve”.

Here are their amazing stories:

John Brigham's Story- John work as a Patient Services Representative. Recently, he alerted a nurse when he saw a patient who needs medical attention when he delivered a meal to a patient's room. When I told John he is our hero, he said "It's nothing....it's the right thing to do".

Maria Petkiewich's story-Maria works in Jazzman. She always come to work with a smile and everyone who have been to Jazzman, know Maria.Last week, Maria received a Gold star pin from a Lahey colleague as according to the colleague, Maria is a "Star". We couldn't agree more.

Ayoub Aitbourezque's story- Ayoub works in the Cafeteria. Last week, he brigthened everyone's day using his creativity by making a "Mickey Mouse" impression using the entree items for our entree display. Although we all couldn't be at Disney that day, he brought the Disney magic to us.

So, in conclusion, I believe Human connection is simply paying a little attention to our surroundings, to the people around us, to the elements around us, expressing your points of view, being empathy and respecting each other differences and work together to achieve a common goal. Positive human connection is what we should all be striving for. It is including all the elements mentioned above and adding a little simplicity and positive attitude. Try it and you will find yourself being more happy, satisfied and fulfilled. Take your time....Life is a journey not short cut.
